I read Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven’s science fiction novel Lucifers Hammer years ago. It is one of the finest books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The book chronicles the events leading up to and the aftermath of the fictional Hamner-Brown Comet (a/k/a The Hammer) striking the Earth in the late 20th century.
Lucifer’s Hammer was written in 1977, well in advance of the ‘asteroid’ disaster movies of the 1990′s such as Armegeddon (1998) and Deep Impact (1998). Also since the book was written the Yellowstone super-volcano was ‘discovered’ in the 1980s by NASA. The book got me to thinking about a disasters of similar magnitude and what I would do in such an event.
Recently quite a number of survival websites, blogs and forums have popped up. Some use the term ‘preppie’ (short for preparedness) instead of survival. A little less blunt I guess. Links are provided to some of the best of these sites in the right-hand sidebar. They are full of useful information concerning how to provide for yourself and your family should disaster strike.
On this site I intend to focus on what kind of disasters might occur, both natural and man-caused. One thing is for sure, there are many ‘time-bombs’ ticking away, and we are well overdue for one or more going off.
